Master of Engineering Programs

The Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering, Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, and Master of Engineering in Information Assurance degrees are designed to assist all individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related areas pursue in-depth study in electrical or computer engineering. With the rapidly changing technological landscape in engineering industries, an advanced degree or continuing education seemingly is becoming increasingly necessary.

Our Master of Engineering programs are based on coursework credits only (no thesis or creative component is required, and no visit to campus is required). Courses are offered via our online streaming media distance education program.

How to Apply?

Apply using Iowa State’s Admissions Web site and Graduate College Web site.

You will need:

  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • A statement of purpose
  • A general application

GRE scores are required only if your undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 or if you have less than two years of full-time employment experience.

To apply to complete the Master of Engineering in Information Assurance program entirely online, choose Computer Engineering as your home department.

Degree Requirements

Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering/Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering

To complete this program you need:

  • A minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework (No fewer than 22 of these credits shall be earned at Iowa State.)
  • At least 24 of the 30 credit hours of coursework must be from electrical and computer engineering with 12 of those credits from a single area of focus and six from outside the area of focus. See Core Research Areas for Graduate Study information on focus areas.
  • Independent Study credits (EE or CprE 590) may be taken as often as desired, but only 3 credit hours may be counted toward the credit requirements for your program of study.

Master of Engineering in Information Assurance

To complete this program you need:

  • A minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework
  • 12 of the 30 credit hours of coursework must be from the following required courses: CprE/Infas 530, 531, 532, and 534
  • At least 6 credit hours must be from two of the following courses: CprE 533, 535, 536, 537
  • 3 credit hours of coursework must be from the capstone CprE 632 course
  • Up to 9 credit hours of electives from an approved list are required
  • Independent Study credits (CprE 590) may be taken as often as desired, but only 3 credit hours may be counted toward the credit requirements for your program of study.
