Computer engineers make computers faster, smaller, and cheaper. You can specialize your computer engineering studies in one of the four focus areas below:
Computing & Networking Systems: Design and analyze computing systems' main components: processors, memories, and peripherals. Gain exposure to cutting-edge multi-core, special-purpose, and reconfigurable computer systems. Plus, study techniques to improve computer system performance, energy consumption, security, and reliability.

Secure & Reliable Computing: Catch cyber criminals, keep your personal computer and information secure, and create technologies for the Internet. Iowa State's Information Assurance Center is one of the nation's few designated U.S. National Security Agency and Department of Defense "centers of excellence."

Software Engineering/Systems: Expand the limits of what computers, cell phones, pacemakers, and other electronic devices can do by developing and improving software that runs those devices. You also can apply your software knowledge to areas such as real-time systems, virtual reality, and gaming. Iowa State offers a new software engineering degree program.
VLSI Design: Create Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits—the foundation for the brains of all electronic devices—including high-speed computer processors, cell phones, and wireless network access points. This area could lead to careers in high-speed communications and the integrated circuits (semiconductor) industry.
